Traveling Cambodia in three weeks.

Angkor Wat
Angkor Wat

Originally Mr K and I planned to spend one week in Cambodia. Turned out there was so much to see that we ended up touring it for three weeks. Even after three weeks we did not manage to see and do it all.

Our small group of three (my father in law, Mr. K and yours truly) had three cities on our agenda:

Phnom Penh, Sihanoukville, and Siem Reap.

Obtaining Visa for Canadians was cheap and fast. We got it on arrival. DO check your visa requirements as rules change every year. What might be true a year ago is not necessarily true this year.

Cambodia temples

It is almost impossible to visit all three destinations in one week. All three cities were so different from one another. With plenty of sight seeing do plan to stay there for longer.

Phnom Penh

Phnom Penh is the capital and is famous for killing fields and S-21 prison that left a forever lasting impression in my brain.

Khmer rouge genocide

Read my post about why I got depressed and vowed to never go to places like that here

There are also lots of restaurants, parks, and temples that one can visit if you are not into torture places.

Phnom Penh killing fields

Sihanoukville

Sihanoukville was about the beach and the scenery. It was an interesting visit. At one point I was concerned for the safety of our belongings but everything was fine at the end.

Sihanoukville

Safety tip:

Do not leave your stuff unattended on the beach at all times and do not travel alone especially if you are a woman. There are small gangs of people walking on the beach looking for stuff. Nothing ever happened to us. I think it was because of Mr K’s size and the fact that there were three of us.

Sihanoukville is a small, very small, city with an awesome beach. The city is not as popular with tourists as Phnom Penh or Siem Reap so it is under developed. It has an airport which we used to get to our third and final destination.

Sihanoukville

We also did fun buggies tour that was epic because it went through the jungle and the city. Seeing local life was eye opening on a lot of levels. On one hand people are dirt poor, on the other hand they seem happy no matter what.

If you travel for more than a week, I would strongly recommend doing the whole three. If not, make Siem Reap a priority. Why? I am glad you asked.

Angkor Wat

Siem Reap

Siem Reap is located to the north of the other two cities and has the most beautiful and breathtaking temples of Angkor Wat, Ta Prohm from the Tomb Raider, and many others. It was so beautiful that I thought I was dreaming.

We decided to ignore all the guides and just went as we were.

We learned a lot on this trip.Angkor Wat

Tip:

  • Rent a bike. This way you will visit the place at your own speed and will conserve energy.

  • Pack some snack and plenty of water.

  • Do not forget your hat. If you are going to be spending there the whole day multiplied by several days you are going to need some cover.

  • It is nearly impossible to visit all the temples in one go so buy a long-term ticket, price 60$.

  • In Siem Reap it is almost impossible to rent a scooter. People say that it is because of the tuk tuk mafia. The jury is still out on this one.

Siem Reap
What to pack with you:

If you are dressed lightly, do pack a pareo or cover your knees and cleavage. You are visiting a holy place so you might not be admitted otherwise.

Make sure you have a charged battery and pack your good camera. If you are one of these people who still thinks a phone camera is ok (I was one of you), don’t. This is the place to take out your big boy stuff and take really awesome pictures.

Bug repellent if you are especially yummy.

I hope, once Jr. is older, to visit Cambodia grounds again. When I went there I did not know what to expect. Now, I do. I have also found out that there is a tour that one can do by motorbike. The tour takes two weeks and it covers most of the country and jungle.

Obviously, it made it to my bucket list even if it is known to have four million land mines that are still to be found.
