White T-shirt has been a life, style, and mind savior ever since I adapted it into my travel wardrobe. It has become my staple piece in any country and during every destination. This post covers everything you should know, like a material composition, care, fit, styles, and quality control, when selecting one for your next adventure.

Over the centuries fashion industry produced some excellent, timeless, and simple pieces. The White T-shirt is one of the best examples.

This simple and versatile piece is the queen and a necessity in any wardrobe, especially a travel one. The beauty of this piece is in the simplicity. Also, when the climate doesn’t permit, it is the perfect layer piece.

Ever wondered what makes Paris girls so chic? See this post on all the scoop.

WHY IS IT AS GOOD AS IT SOUNDS?

Only because it goes with everything, can be styled up or down, makes everything look fresh and new, and no-makeup-look looks good with it. White T is also inexpensive and can be bought anywhere in the world. If you are missing some crispy goodness of a white t-shirt in your closet, do yourselves a favor and buy some. 🙂

Available in different lengths, styles, materials, and finishes you are bound to find the one that fits your particular style! I know I have one or two, or three… 🙂

DO YOU KNOW A WHITE T-SHIRT’S STORY?

White T-shirt has lived a fine life as an undergarment for a long time, but since Marlon Brando, it has become an extra cool yet essential addition to everyone’s wardrobe.

The shirts became even more popular in the 1950s after Marlon Brando wore one in A Streetcar Named Desire, finally achieving status as fashionable, stand-alone, outerwear garments.[3] Often boys wore them while doing chores and playing outside, eventually opening up the idea of wearing them as general-purpose casual clothing.

WHERE TO BUY ONE?

Recommended stores for the most affordable options are any department store that is anywhere has them, Zara (everywhere), and Uniqlo (almost universally). These are my personal favorites where I know that the price per wear is right. I also love Lululemon. Their clothes are of excellent quality, and I honestly can’t get enough.

HOW TO CARE FOR A WHITE T-SHIRT?

Over the years I have tried giving a second life to my white tees only to find them ruined after a couple of washes. It does pay to know your detergents after all. I resolve to Oxiclean in North America or Vanish in Europe. Both non-bleach cleansers that prolong the life of any garment and keep its color fresh.

Do not bleach it!

Traditional bleaches ruin not only the fiber but are also bad for the environment.

If you are out of Oxiclean or Vanish, you can try baking soda on those yellow stains. It works wonders, and it is so much more affordable. I would soak it overnight to get better results and just rinse in the morning. While it may not get rid of the stain entirely, it will brighten your whites in general.

I have two white tops with me and I am not afraid to use them even with my toddler is present.

FABRICS AND WHAT TO AVOID.

Are all t-shirts made the same? NO! If you answered “yes” then you need to read what is coming.

You get what you pay for in most cases. Usually, the price reflects the care the yarn and threads received in the process and the cuts that were made by the people who sewed them. While a two dollar shirt might seem like a good purchase, one might overspend for a lousy quality garment that is going to lose shape as soon as one washes it. I am not for buying a 100$ t-shirt either. Up to 40$ is a good aim, I think.

If you want longevity and great look then aim at thicker fabric with a bit of spandex or lycra in them. They will retain the shape and will feel excellent against your body.

Supima cotton is the royalty regarding feel and look, but it also comes at a pice. It is stretchy, cozy, soft, pleasant to the touch and is very durable. Shop Supima cotton right below!

By the way, I am secretly in love with a gray color. Check this post out for some outfit and color inspirations.

Avoid sheer at all costs because you might look like you are wearing pajamas or underwear.

Want to know what clothes always works during our travels? Here is the post to get familiar with the best pieces ever!

While 100% cotton may seem like a good idea, it might not be in the long run. Wash after wash it will fade away, lose its shape and color.

For a hot climate, I would recommend going for 50% cotton and 50% modal like the one below. Modal is cool to touch therefore is irreplaceable during the hot and humid days on a romantic island getaway.
WHITE T SHIRTAnother good option is a mix of cotton and Tencel or lyocell, viscose, rayon, and silk. All are natural fibers that are perfect for hot days.

Polyester is not a good option for a simple white t-shirt because it absorbs oils like a sponge. Yellow pit stains anyone? It also might create pilling on clothes. So you might skip those blends all together.

Do you have a white t-shirt in your travel closet? Do you love it? Have you picked your favorite yet? I hope you did!
